This morning instead of walking to the office, a recent activity that I have undertaken, I rode the subway.  I enjoy my walks because of the solitude of just following a preplanned route and not having to spend a lot of time thinking about crowded or overheated subway cars or being pushed against people that I have never met or perhaps never will.
This morning was different on the Subway.  It was not so crowded and I had time to observe the different people standing and sitting.  There was a young man, mid 20?s with his face down apparently asleep from a long night out.  There were two young girls going to elementary school, smiling, holding hands wearing their freshly laundered uniforms chatting away with each other.  A mother was with a young boy sitting quietly next to her.
She also held a baby wrapped tightly in a scarf against her body.  Two young girls were staring into mirrors, fixing their bangs and makeup.  And also an assortment of salarymen reading their newspapers or novels or just perhaps staring at the pages.
As I exited the train a strange thought came to my mind.  I asked myself "What if as I exited the station there was a loud explosion and the train that I was on was gone because of either an accident or act of terror?"
Of course I would be impacted by this event.  Perhaps, I would be scared, shaken up afraid to go into a subway for a while.  I also thought I would feel grateful that I had not been on that ill fated subway car.  I would probably watch the event over and over on the evening news and see the faces of the same people that I saw on the subway continuously flashed on the evening news.  But what about those faces, who were they and what would their death mean to me? Although I would mourn for their loss, I really did not know them.
When I was in high school we were required to memorize famous prose. One sentence written by John Donne was sealed into my memory by the repetitions required to memorize it.  "any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind."   Today I wondered how my life would be diminished without ever knowing the people on the subway car that I rode.
Maybe it would be, maybe not.
Seven years ago on September 11 an event conceived in evil, ended the lives of 176 our colleagues.  You may ask yourselves who were they and why should you care? Remembering 9/11 may just be an our company ritual of remembrance that happens each year at this time.   After all they too were only like
the people on the Subway we rode with this morning.  Students and teachers, young mothers who were the sole support of their children, husbands, wives, grandparents? just ordinary people.  Or if we choose to look closer into the lives of those who died September 11 or in my imaginary event today will we discover that they were in fact extraordinary individuals whose very existence had some small impact on our lives or because of their uniqueness in how they think, how they create or empower they may have dramatically changed the course of our lives had a tragic event not occurred.  I prefer to believe the latter. We
are not castles surrounded by impenetrable walls and impassable moats.
It is through the vast array of interdependencies both observed and hidden that we both exist and evolve. By taking time to remember the people we know and learning and caring about the people we only read or hear about in the news can this chain called life evolve and create a better world for us and our children.
So each year at this time, I take the time to remember our colleagues from
9/11 because in their memory I have learned to care about the lives of the subway passengers and know that I would be less without them.
